What Is The Primal Diet?
Firstly, the word Primal refers to the Paleolithic age, a period in history when our primal ancestors ate what they could hunt, fish or gather. This is the starting point for the Primal Diet – meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits and nuts.
The Primal Diet is the diet human beings were designed to eat. It is often referred to as the hunter-gatherer diet or caveman diet. It includes any food that historically could be hunted or found. The idea behind the primal diet is that it’s the diet humans evolved to eat. It can help you lose weight, feel great and live longer.
The Primal Diet is short for Paleolithic Diet and is also known as the Primal Diet, Hunter Gatherer diet, Stone Age Diet, Evolution Diet or even the Caveman Diet.
The Primal Diet is a healthy diet based upon the food e.g. vegetables and animals, that our ancestors would have eaten during the Paleolithic era, which lasted approximately 2.5 million years and only ended around 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture.
The diet of our Paleolithic primal ancestors would have consisted mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts. The would raely, or never have eaten grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. So they would not have been eating bread, pasta, lentils, potatoes since food like these primarily result from farming and are heavily processed.
About 10,000 years ago agriculture developed, and perhaps only 6,000 or 2,000 years ago for Europe. In fact, Great Britain was still making its transition to agriculture at the time of the Romans occupation around 100 BC.
Agriculture led to a change in diet for most people – a change for the worse e.g. eating grains, breads, rice, etc – all unfamiliar to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Since our caveman ancestors the diets of most humans have changed, but our genes have not.
The Primal Diet is the diet humans have evolved to eat. It is not about recreating the existence of the caveman – we still want modern technology, etc. It just encourages you to eat like your hunter-gatherer ancestors, in order to achieve maximum health & fitness – while still being able to enjoy all of the other wonderful things that the modern world offers.
Conventional Health Guidelines
The health of humans started to go down hill as soon as agriculture was introduced. The more bread, pasta, legumes, etc people ate – an agricultural diet – the worse their health became, and the more susceptible they were to illnesses. The further they strayed from their natural diet, the more our health suffers.
We need to understand that when it comes to our diet most people are in a very real sense, eating out of context. Our bodies have a long history of evolution and adaptation, but today most peoples diets are completely wrong – health problems in the form of lack of energy, depression, illnesses and diseases is the result.
Your Traditional Western Diet Makes You Fat
The worldwide obesity epidemic is a relatively new phenomenon. In 1980 obesity rates were less than 10%. Now the rates have doubled or in some cases tripled in the worlds 33 richest countries. Peoples health is getting worse – not better. The high-carb, low fat guidelines are clearly wrong and when you add into that processed foods, junk foods, high sugar consumption then it’s no surprise there been an explosion in obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases.
Shockingly, by 2030 it is predicted that more than 50% of Americans will be obese and a third of the British population will be obese. People need to ask why this is happening, and make a change. Since 1977 by following the conventional modern diet of high-carbs, low fat has been making people fatter and sicker every year. It’s time that stopped.
Our primal hunter-gather ancestors didn’t suffer at such a rate with obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases – so they must have been doing something right. It would be wise to understand what their diet was like. What did our slim, strong, lean, fit, healthy ancestors of 50,000 years ago eat?
Is the Primal Diet for me?
The primal diet can be followed for your whole life – not just for a short period of time e.g. to lose weight for a few weeks , etc. It is proven to be a healthy diet, and long term can help reduce numerous modern diseases including cancer, heart disease, obesity, etc.
If you need to lose weight, or improve your body composition, or if you want to get lean or just improve your overall health and energy levels, then the Primal Diet is worth trying. Many people are achieving fantastic results on the diet.
